How career is read in a birth chart
Career sits mainly with the 10th house, the house of karma, profession, status and public standing. Its position at the very top of the chart is deliberate: it is where your work meets the world. Astrologers study the sign on the 10th, the planets placed in it, the planets that aspect it, and above all the strength and placement of the 10th lord, the ruler of the 10th sign. A strong, well placed 10th lord tends to support a clear direction and steady rise.
The 10th house is never read alone. Income and gains come from the 2nd house (earned wealth) and the 11th house (gains and fulfilled ambition). Whether you lean toward employment or enterprise is judged from the 6th house (service and daily work) versus the 7th house (business, dealings and partnership). Reading these together, rather than one placement in isolation, is what separates a real career analysis from a one line guess.

The main birth chart (Rashi) shows the broad picture, but Vedic astrology uses a dedicated divisional chart for work, the Dashamsha or D10, each sign divided into ten parts. A judgement made from the 10th house of the Rashi chart is confirmed or refined against the D10, which reveals the finer texture of profession, the nature of the workplace and the peaks and dips of a working life.
This is why a serious career reading looks at both charts. A promising 10th house in the birth chart that is weak in the D10 tells a different story than one supported in both. The two charts together give a far more reliable read than the birth chart alone.
Job or business, and when things shift
For the job versus business question, astrologers weigh the 6th house and Saturn (which favour service and employment) against the 7th house, Mercury and a strong, independent 10th lord (which favour trade and running your own venture). A well supported 6th house with Saturn can make a demanding job deeply rewarding, while a strong 7th and 11th with Mercury often points to enterprise. Many charts show a blend, and the honest answer is sometimes a salaried start moving toward independence later.
Timing is read through the Vimshottari dasha, the planetary period system. A career opens, changes or peaks when the running dasha or sub period belongs to the 10th lord, the 6th or 11th lord, or a planet strongly tied to your career houses. On top of that, the slow transits of Saturn and Jupiter over the 10th house and the 10th lord tend to mark real turning points: Saturn brings responsibility, restructuring and hard earned rise, while Jupiter over the 10th often opens a window for growth, recognition or a favourable move.
